The Heart Persists

I was walking by a retirement home in Eugene one morning on the way to our meditation center when I saw this simple heart drawn on the sidewalk leading to the barred back entryway. I was struck by the juxtaposition of the spontaneous marks - two simple curves that create a heart - and the barred metal gate. It was both sweet and poignant to see these contrasting shapes and realities. Even the concrete looked like it could be seen either as scruffy or as as the perfect contrast to the heart.
